VILLANOVA, Pa. - Despite 26 points from senior Sarah Nelson, the Creighton women's basketball team suffered a 68-54 loss at Villanova on Saturday, Feb. 1.
The loss dropped Creighton to 13-9 on the season and 7-3 in BIG EAST play, while Villanova is 16-5 overall and 6-4 in conference action.
The Bluejays opened the game with a flurry as Creighton built an 11-5 lead by the 14:28 mark. Senior McKenzie Fujan opened the Bluejays scoring with a running six footer from the left side. After a three-pointer by Villanova made it 5-2, sophomore Marissa Janning and Nelson gave Creighton its first lead at 6-5. Nelson followed with a step-back trey, then Fujan capped the run with an eight-foot jumper from the left elbow.
Villanova responded with a 12-4 run of its own to take an 18-15 lead with 10:41 remaining in the half. Janning knotted the game at 18-18 with her only trey of the game, but the Wildcats scored 16 of the next 19 points to build a 34-21 lead (3:33) and took a 38-27 lead in at the break.
Fujan knocked down two free throws to open the second half, but the Bluejays missed their first seven shots to allow Villanova to push its lead to 52-31 with 11:44 remaining.
Down the stretch the Wildcats took the air out of the ball by bleeding the shot clock to single digits on each possession.
Nelson finished with a season-high 26 points and also posted her second straight double-double with 11 rebounds, while Fujan finished with 14 points. Fujan and Nelson combined to shoot 13-of-23 (57%) from the field, but the rest of the Bluejays were a combined 3-of-26 (12%).
