OMAHA – Creighton men’s tennis player Quinn Dippel won the men’s singles title at the University of Kansas in week four of the 2014 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Summer Circuit.
Dippel won five matches over three days to grab the singles crown, defeating Mac Rechan of Georgetown 6-2, 7-6 in the championship match on Sunday. After dropping just eight games in three matches against opponents from St. Bonaventure, Nebraska and Iowa, his biggest challenge came in the semifinal. Dippel dropped the first set 6-4 to Max Fil of Southeast Oklahoma State but won the second 6-3 and a third-set superbreaker 10-5 to advance to the final.
One of five Jays active at the tournament in Lawrence, Dippel was joined by fellow teammates Nick Thompson and Michael Koch. On the women’s side, Katherine Nelsen and Jennie Hartjes also participated.
Thompson and Hartjes each won their first-round singles match but fell in the second round to top-three seeded players.
Despite each dropping their first singles match Koch and Nelsen rebounded to win their respective singles backdraw to finish a successful weekend.
In doubles, Thompson and Koch teamed up to advance to the semifinals, dropping only five games along the way. On the women’s side, Nelsen and Hartjes rolled to an 8-2 victory before falling to the eventual champions 8-7 in a tiebreaker.
A week before the KU tourney, Dippel and teammate Jake Norman participated in a week three event at Wichita State seeded fourth and second, respectively, in the men’s singles bracket.
Norman advanced to the semifinals with a pair of straight-set wins but fell 13-11 in a tiebreaker. Dippel advanced to the quarterfinals.
In doubles, Norman teamed up with singles champion to capture the men’s doubles title.
The Jays’ 2014-15 tournament schedule begins in the fall.
