WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Creighton Volleyball team shook off a first set loss to rally and defeat host Georgetown in four sets on Saturday night in the nation's capital.
Scores of the CU victory were 18-25, 25-22, 25-22, 25-21.
The win was Creighton's (18-6, 9-3 BIG EAST) third in a row and completed a 2-0 road trip after last night's 3-0 victory at Villanova. It was the first meeting between the Bluejays and Hoyas, who dropped to 10-15 and 4-8 in league action.
"I was really pleased to get two road wins this weekend at two very tough places to play," said CU head coach Kirsten Bernthal Booth. "I thought our blocking was outstanding tonight."
Lauren Smith had a freshman-record 12 of CU's 19 blocks, while Kate Elman turned in a season-best 24 digs. Three CU women had a dozen kills each, Melanie Jereb, Leah McNary and Jess Bird. Bird also had 15 digs for her seventh double-double of the campaign. Also noteworthy was the play of Ashley Jansen, who turned in career-highs with 39 assists and three kills, in addition to 10 digs for her first career double-double. The Bluejays finished with 53 kills, two aces, 69 digs and 19 blocks on .165 hitting.
Smith's 12 blocks are tied for third-most in CU history for a four-set match, as are the team's 19 blocks for a four-set contest.
Georgetown was paced by 12 kills and 17 digs from Alex Johnson, while Ashlie Williams and Lauren Saar each provided 11 kills. MacKenzie Simpson turned in 24 digs, while Caitlin Brauneis had a double-double with 47 assists and 10 digs. GU tallied 51 kills, seven aces, 78 digs and seven blocks on .120 hitting overall.
"We need to get back in the gym and get better for another tough road weekend next weekend," noted Booth.
Creighton will close out the road portion of its first BIG EAST campaign next weekend when it visits St. John's on Friday at 4 pm Central and Seton Hall on Saturday at 3 pm Central.
