WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Creighton women's soccer team suffered a 4-0 loss at Georgetown on Sunday, Oct. 20 in the Bluejays final regular season road contest of 2013.
The loss dropped Creighton to 9-6-1 overall and 2-4-1 in BIG EAST action. Georgetown, meanwhile, moved to 13-1-2 on the season and 5-1-1 in BIG EAST play.
Creighton just missed a chance to take an early 1-0 lead as junior Stephanie Anasi sent a perfect pass over the Georgetown defense to freshman Lauren Sullivan along the deep right corner. Rather than taking a difficult one-touch shot, Sullivan opted to dribble for better position. The decision, however, allowed Georgetown to scramble back to take possession from Sullivan and deny the Bluejays.
The Hoyas took advantage in the 17th minute as Kailey Blain converted a crossing pass from Daphne Corboz for a goal from 12 yards out at 16:53.
Georgetown extended its lead to 2-0 in the 38th minute as the BIG EAST preseason offensive player of the year, Corboz, scored from 12 yards out herself. The assist was credited to Grace Damaska via a centering pass.
Down 2-0 at halftime, Creighton continued to fight but Georgetown was simply too much for the Bluejays as the Hoyas got two insurance goals from Vanessa Skrumbis to salt the match away in the second half.
The Bluejays were outshot 19-6 in the match, while each team finished with two corners.
"All credit to Georgetown, they are the best team we have played this year and they are where we would like to be," said Creighton head coach Bruce Erickson. "[Georgetown] is dangerous all 90 minutes. I liked our effort and the chances we created. Starting five freshman and a young squad left us a bit inexperienced."
Creighton returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 26 as the Bluejays host Butler at 7 p.m. in Morrison Stadium.
