Baseball Rallies for 5-4 Win with Two Runs in the Eighth

MILLINGTON, Tenn. - Creighton baseball remained hot as the Bluejays posted two runs in the eighth inning to slip past Arkansas State, 5-4, on Sunday, March 9.

The win moved Creighton to 6-4-1 on the season, while Arkansas State fell to 6-8 overall.  The Bluejays' win extended Creighton's unbeaten streak to seven games.

Junior Landon Lucansky got Creighton on the board first in the top of the second with his first career home run over the left field wall.

The Red Wolves took advantage of two Bluejay errors to plate three unearned runs in the fourth, nabbing a 3-1 lead.

Creighton got even by continuing to play long ball in the sixth.  Sophomore Tommy Clouthier drew a one-out walk, then senior Mike Gerber unloaded on the first pitch of his at-bat for his third long ball of the 2014.

Arkansas State plated its first earned run of the game in the seventh on an RBI single from Joe Schrimpf.

The Bluejays had one more rally in them, this one of the two-out variety.  With two men down in the top of the eighth, pinch-hitter Joey Mancuso lifted a single into right field.  Junior Jake Peter followed with a single through the right side to bring Gerber back to the plate.  This time the Gerber worked a 3-1 count before blasting a two-run double to right to give the Bluejays a 5-4 lead.

Creighton starter, sophomore Austin Groth, departed after 3.2 innings.  Groth allowed three unearned runs on five hits and a walk.  The Bluejay bullpen got 2.1 innings from sophomore Nick Highberger, followed by two outs from sophomore Will Bamesberger

The win went to junior Mark Lukowski (1-0), who recorded four flawless outs.  Peter came on to close the door in the ninth, working around two walks and a hit to pick up his first save of the season.

Arkansas State's Coulton Lee took the loss (0-1), allowing one run on two hits without recording an out.

Gerber spearheaded Creighton's offense with two of the Bluejays' six hits in the game and four RBI.

The Bluejays will go for the sweep of the Red Wolves on Monday, March 10 at 5:00 pm.
