SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The No. 22 Creighton men’s soccer team scored inside the first three minutes of the match but Seton Hall posted three consecutive goals to come away with a 3-2 victory over the Bluejays Saturday afternoon at the Pirates’ Owen T. Carroll Field.
Creighton (7-6-2, 3-3-1 BIG EAST) was more aggressive on offense in the second half with nine shot attempts while holding SHU to four. CU also led in corner kicks after the break 6-1 but could not connect on a goal. A Bluejay attempt in the final minutes that would have knotted the match hit the left post.
Seton Hall (7-7-2, 3-4-0 BIG EAST) improved to 6-2-1 at home this year including four of the last five matches at Carroll Field.
Sophomore Timo Pitter connected on the first goal of the game on a cross from freshman Fabian Herbers in the third minute to give Creighton a 1-0 early lead.
Three minutes later SHU knotted the game at 1-1 on a goal by Samuel Geiler from Max Garcia. Seton Hall’s Kai Greene broke the tie with an unassisted goal at the 18:19 mark to give the Pirates a 2-1 advantage. Geiler’s second goal of the game came off of a penalty kick in the 33rd minute to make it 3-1 Seton Hall.
Less than a minute later, Creighton was assisted by an own goal by SHU to make the score 3-2.
The Pirates’ 3-2 lead held up for the rest of the match.
Neither team could score the rest of the way despite good scoring chance by the Bluejays.
CU junior goalkeeper Alex Bolowich finished with two saves and dropped to 6-5-1 overall while SHU’s Julian Spindler claimed the win to improve to 6-7-2 this season.
The Pirates ended the match with more shot attempts at 15-14 and while Creighton attempted nine corner kicks to four for SHU.
Creighton returns to Omaha for its final two home matches of the season against Drake and DePaul. The Bluejays will honor its six seniors on Senior Day against the Blue Demons next weekend.
