Women's Soccer Downed By DePaul, 2-1
OMAHA, Neb - Creighton women's soccer suffered a 2-1 loss to DePaul on Saturday, Oct. 12.
The loss dropped the Bluejays to 9-4-1 on the season and 2-2-1 in BIG EAST play. DePaul, meanwhile, moved to 9-2-2 overall and 3-1-1 in BIG EAST action.
The Blue Demons jumped out to a 1-0 lead early, scoring in the seventh minute. Erin Pekovitch tallied the goal for DePaul grabbing a ball the Bluejays failed to clear and sending it past Creighton goalkeeper, freshman Danielle Rice, at 6:58.
DePaul's goal appeared to raise the anger of the Bluejays as Creighton stormed back to score the equalizer in the 17th minute and controlled the remainder of the opening period.
Creighton seemed to have missed the chance to tie the score as a DePaul defender punched the ball from sophomore Kirstyn Corder via a slide tackle. Junior Madelyn Buckner, however, raced in to claim the ball and notched Creighton's goal at 16:39. Buckner's goal came from 18 yards away, giving her two on the season.
From that point the defenses took center stage, led by a stunning stop from DePaul's MaryKate Cicinelli in the 38th minute. Cicinelli blocked a shot that had gotten past DePaul keeper, Alejandra Godinez, preventing Corder from recording her eighth goal of 2013.
Both teams had chances in the second period as Creighton fired off nine shots, while DePaul had seven.
Finally in the overtime it was DePaul coming out with the game-winning goal in the final minute as Amber Paul converted a crossing pass from Elise Wyatt with 37 seconds remaining in the overtime session.
Creighton outshot DePaul 19-16 in the match and created five corners to just two for the Blue Demons.
The Bluejays return to the pitch on Thursday, Oct. 17 at 3 p.m. as Creighton travels to play Villanova in Villanova, Pa.
