OMAHA, Neb. – Prior to Blue-White Scrimmage on Sunday, August 12, the No. 3 ranked Creighton men’s soccer team will host its second annual “Kicking with the Jays” free soccer clinic for children from the Omaha Housing Authority at Morrison Stadium at 2 p.m.
Former Creighton head men’s soccer coach Bob Warming’s daughter Audrey will be remembered during this clinic as her foundation “Audrey – Shoes for Kids” will provide brand new soccer cleats to each child participating. The shoes were funded by a private donations, including contributions from adidas and Diadora.
Currently the head men’s soccer coach at Penn State, Warming is the winningest coach in Jays history. He led Creighton from 1990-94 and again from 2001-09, posting a combined record of 190-61-34 (.726) during his 14 years with the Jays. Warming’s daughter, Audrey, was tragically killed in an auto accident this April.
“We are continuing the legacy that Bob and Audrey Warming began with the Omaha Housing Authority, we are very very grateful that so many people have donated to this program,” said current Creighton head men’s soccer coach Elmar Bolowich. “We are also thankful for the support from the vendors, to bring shoes and ship shoes that we can provide for kids in need.”
Creighton and UnitedHealthcare will again cosponsor “Kicking With the Jays”, which welcomed more than 230 children last year. Many of the children in attendance last year were refugees from African countries such as Liberia and Sudan.
“Its important for our players to see that there are less privileged kids, even in Omaha,” added Bolowich. “Its a good thing for us to help these kids, instruct them a little bit and show them what college soccer is all about, so they look at the educational side and not only the athletic side of college.”
Turnout for the event is expected to remain close to 200 as the group will have a chance to participate in an hour-long soccer clinic with the Creighton men’s team. Following the clinic, participants will be invited to watch as the men’s soccer team plays in the Blue-White Scrimmage beginning at 5 p.m.
