OMAHA, Neb. – The Creighton men's soccer team edged Santa Clara 1-0 at Morrison Stadium Sunday night after a long weather delay between halves.
Creighton freshman Ricky Lopez-Espin scored his second career goal and game-winning tally of the season in the 59th minute. Senior Jose Ribas assisted on the score.
With the win the Bluejays improve to 2-0-0 while the Broncos fall to 1-1-0. It marks the 19th consecutive season that Creighton stands unbeaten after two contests.
The first half ended in a scoreless draw. Santa Clara led Creighton 3-1 in shots on goal and 4-1 in corner kicks.
Immediately after the conclusion of the half, the game was delayed two hours and 51 minutes due to lightning.
Creighton came out with more energy and aggressive play in the second half. It paid off with the Lopez-Espin score. Creighton bettered its shot total from the first half by five and led in corners after the delay 3-1.
Creighton’s Connor Sparrow posted his second shutout of the season while playing a full 90 minutes in net to improve to 2-0-0 on the year.
The Jays return to the pitch on Friday night when they host Western Illinois at 7:30 p.m. CT inside Morrison Stadium. The match will be played in conjunction with the annual Socctoberfest held on the stadium grounds, following the women’s soccer match against New Mexico State beginning at 5 p.m.
