OMAHA, Neb. – The Creighton men’s soccer team upended No. 21 Wisconsin 4-2 in the Bluejays’ final exhibition match of the season inside Morrison Stadium Friday night.
CU freshman Ricky Lopez-Espin scored the game-winner in the 58th minute on a feed from sophomore Fabian Herbers to give the Jays a 3-1 lead. Lopez-Espin added another in the 64th minute on an assist from fellow freshman Noah Franke to make it 4-1.
Creighton never trailed in the contest as senior Jose Ribas opened the scoring in the eighth minute to put the Jays up 1-0. Ribas crushed the ball from distance, shortly after Wisconsin could not clear a corner kick, past a stunned goalie.
Junior Timo Pitter scored off of a free kick from just outside of the box in the 25th minute to put Creighton up 2-0. That score held up into halftime.
Wisconsin got on the board in the 52nd minute after Mike Catalano converted a penalty kick to cut the Jays’ lead to 2-1 before Lopez-Espin scored his pair of goals.
The Badgers closed out the scoring in the 83rd minute on a goal by Nikola Atlija from just inside the top of the box.
Creighton’s Connor Sparrow played a full 90 minutes in net, allowing two goals and making a pair of saves. CU outshot UW 14-6 and led in corners 8-3.
With the win, Creighton remains undefeated in exhibition play under head coach Elmar Bolowich at 3-0-5. Overall, the Jays remain unbeaten in their past 11 preseason matches with a 6-0-5 record.
