OMAHA, Neb. - Seton Hall dealt Creighton's Matt Warren his first loss of the season as the Pirates plated five runs in the seventh to take an 8-2 win.
The loss dropped the Bluejays to 23-14-1 overall and 8-2 in BIG EAST conference play. Seton Hall, meanwhile, moved to 33-9 on the season and 7-3 in conference.
The highly anticipated pitchers duel between Warren and Seton Hall's Josh Prevost lived up to the billing as each team was limited to just one hit through the first four innings. Seton Hall broke through with a single run in the fifth on two hits and a safety squeeze.
In the sixth it was Creighton's turn to apply a bit of pressure to Prevost. Freshman Nicky Lopez drew a one-out walk. A hit and run play allowed Creighton to stay out of an inning-ending double play as senior Brad McKewon bounced out to short. With two down, sophomore Ryan Fitzgerald worked the Bluejays' second walk of the inning to put runners at first and second. Junior Jake Peter and senior Mike Gerber followed with RBI singles through the right side to give Creighton a 2-1 lead.
Seton Hall, however, responded with five runs in the seventh and two more in the eighth to claim the game.
Prevost moved to 10-1 on the season, allowing two runs on three hits and two walks in a complete game. Warren, meanwhile, suffered his first loss (9-1) allowing four runs on six hits in 6.1 innings of work.
The Bluejays and Pirates will continue their three-game series on Saturday, May 3 at 6:30 pm as Creighton celebrates Military/1st Responders Family night at TD Ameritrade Park Omaha.
