DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- The Creighton women’s golf team finished fifth at the Big East Women’s Golf Championships presented by NEW YORK LIFE on Saturday, the program's best finish in a league championship event since 2005.
The Hills Course at the LPGA International (6,176 yards / Par 72) in Daytona Beach, Fla., hosted the meet.
The six-team field also included Seton Hall, Georgetown, St. John’s, Xavier and Butler.
Seton Hall (928) finished first claiming their first Big East crown. Georgetown (935) finished second followed by St. John’s (937), Xavier (939), Creighton 972 (324+322+326), and Butler (979). Creighton's 972 total was its best for a 54-hole event since the Jackrabbit Fall Invitational held Sept. 30-Oct. 1, 2012.
St. John’s Harin Lee finished first with a 226 (74+74+78). There was a five way tie for second. Strong winds and heavy rain plagued the tournament even causing play to be suspended on Friday and making playing conditions on Thursday and Saturday difficult.
Individually for the Jays, Kelsey Peterson was the top golfer. The freshman finished tied for 13th shooting a 238 (80+79+79). Junior Rachel Thompson finished tied for 17th with a 243 (82+78+83) and sophomore Grace Yowell finished tied for 19th with a 246 (80+83+83). It was the first top-20 finish of Yowell's career.
Junior Katie Morel (T-25th, 88+82+81=251) and freshman Annie Pearson (29th, 82+89+90=261) both competed in the championships as well while contributing to the team's success.
The Jays will return all seven golfers for the 2014 fall season.
