PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa. - Led by seven shutout innings from Matt Warren, Creighton claimed the series from Villanova with a 4-0 win on Saturday, April 19.
The win pushed the Bluejays' 2014 record to 20-12-1 and Creighton's BIG EAST mark to 5-1. Villanova, meanwhile, fell to 11-24 overall and 3-6 in conference play.
The Bluejay offense continued to get a lift from sophomore Joey Mancuso as the Missouri native opened the scoring in the second with a two-run single. Sophomore Reagan Fowler and junior Landon Lucansky set the stage for Mancuso, reaching on an error and a walk respectively. A wild pitch moved both runners into scoring posiiton with one down and Mancuso made Villanova regret it with a single to left.
Creighton doubled its edge in the fifth, posting two runs on three hits and two walks. The Bluejays didn't get a base runner in the frame until two men were out, but junior Jake Peter bounced a single up the middle and sophomore Ryan Fitzgerald drew a walk. Once more the Wildcats allowed a wild pitch to move runners to second and third, then senior Mike Gerber laced a two-run single through the right side to make it 4-0.
Despite having his start pushed back two days due a dental issue, Warren showed no ill effects on the mound, limiting Villanova to just three hits and two walks in seven innings to move to 8-0 on the season.
The few times Warren did face a little trouble, he was able to work out of it as Villanova hit into inning-ending double plays in the third and fifth innings.
Creighton's bullpen finished off the game for the Bluejays, inducing two more inning-ending double plays in the eighth and ninth frames to preserve the shutout win.
Villanova's Hunter Schryver took the loss (1-5), allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits and three walks in 4.2 innings.
Peter led the Bluejay offense with two hits in the game, while Gerber and Mancuso each finished with two RBI.
Creighton returns to action on Tuesday, April 22 as the Bluejays open a nine-game homestand against Omaha at 6:30 pm.
