LONG BEACH, Calif. -- Creighton wrapped up an eight-day trip to the west coast with a 78-61 win over Long Beach State on Tuesday night. The Bluejays led 48-28 at the break and were never threatened after intermission.
Creighton improved to 6-2 with the victory, while Long Beach State has dropped eight straight since opening the year with a 71-59 win over Hawaii Pacific.
The Bluejays fell behind 9-3 in the opening minutes before catching its breath and righting the ship with a 15-3 run that stunned the hosts. Ethan Wragge and Devin Brooks opened the run before a pretty Doug McDermott fadeaway jumper. Avery Dingman then came off the bench to hit a three-pointer before Will Artino had back-to-back scores to make it 18-12.
Creighton's long-range shooting proved lethal during the first half, as CU hit 10-of-17 from distance in the first half to build a 48-28 lead at the break. McDermott had 11 points, while Isaiah Zierden and Wragge both scored nine points.
Creighton opened the second half on an 11-2 run as the lead ballooned to 59-32, thanks to four points by McDermott and consecutive three-ball's from Wragge.
Creighton moved its second-leading scorer, Wragge, into the starting five, but the Bluejay bench provided the spark and finished with 37 points.
McDermott led all scorers with 22 points on the night, while Wragge had 15. Zierden added a career-high with 12 points, and Artino added a season-best 13.
Long Beach State was led by 13 points from A.J. Spencer, 11 from Mike Caffey and 10 by Dan Jennings.
Creighton is home for the next month, starting with Sunday's 5:07 pm game vs. Nebraska.
NOTES: Creighton changed its starting line-up, inserting Ethan Wragge for Will Artino. Creighton had used its opening day line-up for every game of the 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons ...
