OMAHA, Neb. - Junior Brad McKewon's 3-for-4, two RBI day paced Creighton as the Bluejays claimed a 7-3 to earn a series sweep over Bradley on Sunday, April 7.
Creighton moved to 18-6 on the season with the win and 5-1 in the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC). Bradley fell to 11-16 overall and 1-5 in the MVC.
Bradley got out to a 1-0 lead with a single run in the second, but the Braves left the bases loaded to give the Jays the momentum. Creighton took advantage in the bottom of the second as freshman Reagan Fowler drew a leadoff walk, went to second on a sacrifice and scored on fellow freshman Ryan Fitzgerald's RBI single to left.
The Bluejays took control in the third when senior Alex Staehely drove a two-out two-run double into left-center to bring home junior Federico Castagnini and sophomore Jake Peter. Castagnini had drawn a one-out walk and Peter reached on an infield single.
Leading 3-1, Creighton tacked on runs in the fourth and sixth innings. Sophomore Kevin Lamb tripled in the fourth, then McKewon drove him home with a single up the middle. In the sixth it was McKewon singling to right, swiping second and scoring on an RBI knock to right by Castagnini.
Bradley tightened the game with two runs off reliever, senior Mark Winkelman, in the top of the eighth to make it 5-3. As Creighton did in every inning that Bradley scored in the series, the Jays responded. The Bluejays pushed their lead back to four with RBI singles by McKewon and junior Mike Gerber.
Junior Bryan Sova got the final four outs to earn his first save as a Jay. Freshman Austin Groth picked up the win (2-0) limited Bradley to one run on three hits and two walks in five innings.
Bradley's Stephan Toma took the loss (1-1), giving up four runs on five hits and four walks in 3.1 innings.
The Jays return to action on Tuesday, April 9 as Creighton begins its annual three-game series with cross-state rival Nebraska at 6:35 p.m. in Lincoln.
