OMAHA, Neb. - The Bluejays' women's soccer team dropped a tough 2-1 decision in their BIG EAST opener to conference favorite, Marquette, on Thursday, Sept. 26.
The loss ended Creighton's seven-match winning streak, dropped the Bluejays to 7-3-0 overall and 0-1-0 in BIG EAST play. Marquette, meanwhile, moved to 8-3-0 on the season and 1-0-0 in the BIG EAST.
The Golden Eagles controlled possession throughout much of the match, outshooting the Jays 26-4.
Despite the disparity in opportunities, Creighton held firmly on defense, limiting Marquette to just one goal in the opening period as Cara Jacobsen scored in the 15th minute via a pass from Mary Luba.
Down 1-0 as the half drew towards a close, Creighton created a corner and freshman Emily Roll made the most of the opportunity with a 'Bend it Like Beckham' moment. Roll sent the corner in from the right side at to the back post untouched for the tying goal at 43:31. It was Roll's first goal of the season, sending the match to the break at 1-1.
The Jays showed flash of energy in the opening five minutes of the second period, but the Golden Eagles responded with the tenacity you'd expect from the four-time defending BIG EAST Champion by regaining control.
Marquette continued to impose its will, outshooting the Bluejays 17-2 in the second period, finally breaking through for to reclaim the lead at 2-1 in the 57th minute on a goal from Omaha native Liz Bartles at 56:59. Bartles' goal was via a centering pass from Vanessa Legault-Cordisco.
Creighton freshman goalkeeper Danielle Rice closed the match with a career-high nine saves, while Marquette's Amanda Engel did not record a save.
The Jays return to action on Sunday, Sept. 29 in Creighton's first BIG EAST road contests at St. John's at 12 p.m.
