OMAHA, Neb. - The Creighton women's basketball qualified for postseason play for the seventh consecutive season as the Bluejays will host Missouri in the first round of the WNIT Tournament on Thursday, March 20.
Creighton enters Thursday's contest with a 19-13 record (12-6 in BIG EAST play), including seven wins over teams in the top-50 RPI. The Bluejays are led by sophomore Marissa Janning, the BIG EAST reigning Player of the Year, as well as All-BIG EAST Second Team Selections senior Sarah Nelson and McKenzie Fujan. Janning led the BIG EAST conference in scoring with 17.8 ppg, while Nelson led Creighton in rebounding at 7.9 rpg. A critical piece for the Bluejays, Fujan's best performance of the season came against BIG EAST Champion, DePaul, scoring 38 points in the Bluejays 86-78 win on Jan. 4.
Missouri enters Thursday's game with a 17-13 record and a 6-10 mark in the SEC. The Tigers opened the season with 12 wins in their first 14 games, but struggled in the tough Southeastern Confernece. Missouri is led by Bri Kulas' 18.6 ppg, while Jordan Frericks leads the Tigers on the boards with 209 on the year.
Creighton and Missouri have met 14 times overall, with each team claiming seven wins. The two squads have matched up six times in Omaha, three going to each team. The last meeting came on Dec. 2, 2006, a 70-66 win for the Tigers on their home floor.
This is Creighton's 10th appearance in the WNIT Postseason Tournament, the last coming in 2011. The Bluejays have a combined record of 13-8, including five victories as Creighton claimed the Championship in 2004.
The time of Thursday's game has not yet been set, the Creighton/Missouri winner will advance to face the victor in a battle between Butler/South Dakota State.
