OMAHA, Neb. -- Jess Bird and Michelle Sicner had double-doubles as Creighton Volleyball swept Georgetown for its 20th victory of the season on Friday night before 1,336 fans at D.J. Sokol Arena. Scores of the match were 25-19, 25-17, 27-25.
The victory lifts Creighton to 20-7 on the season and 11-4 in BIG EAST competition. CU is now in a three-way tie for second in the BIG EAST with Butler and Xavier and holds the tiebreaker over both fellow BIG EAST newcomers.
Georgetown closes its season with a 10-19 mark and was 4-12 in BIG EAST play.
Sicner had 36 assists and 16 digs for her team-best 13th double-double of the fall, while Bird had her ninth double-dip of her freshman campaign with 11 kills and 11 digs. Creighton finished the night with 46 kills, six aces, 66 digs and six blocks on .165 hitting.
Georgetown was paced by nine kills by Ashlie Williams, while MacKenzie Simpson had a match-best 18 digs. The Hoyas had 31 kills, three aces, 63 digs and six blocks on .128 hitting.
Leah McNary helped Creighton to a 25-19 win in the first set, generating five kills among CU's first 11 points. Down 4-2 early, Kelli Browning served up a 7-0 run that gave CU a lead it would never surrender, capping the set win on a Kate Elman service ace. McNary finished the frame with six kills while Sicner had eight assists and nine digs to lead the win.
Creighton never trailed in the second set, a 25-17 win. CU led 8-7 before breaking away with a 10-3 burst to build a comfortable cushion. Bird had eight kills in the frame while Sicner had 15 assists and five digs.
Georgetown overcame a 20-16 deficit late in the third set and would own a pair of set point opportunities, but Creighton turned away both chances on kills by McNary and Bird to even the score at 25-all. CU would get a kill from Browning to reach match point, where Elman served up an ace to end the contest. Six women had multiple kills in the third set.
Creighton closes out the regular-season on Sunday with a 1 pm match vs. Villanova. Savannah Smith will be honored prior to the contest as part of Senior Day.
NOTES: The victory secured Creighton's fifth 20-win season, all of which have come since 2006 ... Marquette clinched the No. 1 seed in next week's BIG EAST Tournament with a win over Xavier on Friday ... The win was Creighton's 300th victory since restarting the program in 1994 ... Jess Bird's double-double was the sixth in the freshman's last eight outings.
