Associate Athletic Director for External Operations

Kevin Sarver, associate athletics director for external operations, is in his 25th year at Creighton and his 21st as an athletics administrator.

Sarver oversees all external operations for the department including the Jaybacker booster club organization, ticketing, sports information, radio and television shows and game broadcasts, publications, licensing, the University's official athletics web site - - and he assists with home game event management for men's basketball and men's and women's soccer.

In December, 2004, Sarver added the responsibility of administrator for the men's and women's soccer programs and, in August, 2006, was appointed Tournament Manager for the 2008 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship First/Second Rounds at Qwest Center Omaha. Sarver also served as Tournament Manager for the 2012 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship Second/Third Rounds at CenturyLink Center Omaha and he will also oversee the 2015 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship Second/Third Rounds at CenturyLink Center Omaha as Tournament Manager.  

Under Sarver’s guidance since the start of the 1996-97 academic year, the department’s Jaybacker booster club has reached all-time highs in members and revenue in 15 of the last 16 years. In 2012-13, over 2,600 families and businesses joined Jaybackers and gifts to the organization totaled over $3.7 million. In the last 17 years, the Jaybacker Organization has more than quadrupled in members while gifts have increased from $376,000 in 1996-97 to over $3.7 million in 2012-13. In addition, men’s basketball season ticket revenue has risen from $400,000 in 1996-97 to nearly $3.5 million in 2012-13 with season ticket sales rising from 3,533 in 1996-97 to 13,739 in 2012-13. Sarver also serves on the committees of the department’s two biggest fund-raising events of the year – the Bluejay Jamboree and the Bluejay Bash golf outing. Those events generate nearly $300,000 and $100,000, respectively, for the department each year.

Sarver, 46, who also serves as the department’s trademark licensing manager and master of ceremonies for the annual Bluejay Jamboree dinner/auction fund-raiser and the annual CU Athletics Hall of Fame Banquet, graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor of arts degree in journalism from Creighton in May, 1989. Sarver started his professional career one month later when he was hired by his alma mater as the sports information director in June, 1989.

As sports information director, Sarver, who worked in CU’s sports information office all four years as an undergraduate including serving as the department’s interim SID the second semester of his junior year, coordinated all game management activities including the issuing of credentials, the compilation of official statistics, photography and public address announcements. Sarver also coordinated the publicity for the school’s athletic programs, its coaches, staff and student-athletes through weekly news releases, game notes, news conferences and personal contacts with local, regional and national media. Sarver was also the driving force in the department’s transition to desktop publishing and he wrote, designed and edited team media guides and game programs as well as department pamphlets, brochures, special event invitations, flyers and Jaybacker booster club brochures. Sarver was also responsible for the official statistics of the annual NCAA College World Series held annually at Omaha’s Johnny Rosenblatt Stadium.

In July, 1993, Sarver continued his sports information duties but he was promoted to Assistant Director of Athletics for Media Relations & Promotions. Sarver’s additional duties included the evaluation of CU’s in-house licensing program, the development of auxiliary athletics logos and the subsequent hiring of Licensing Resource Group as CU’s licensing company. Sarver also was charged with the writing, designing and editing of corporate sponsorship brochures, the writing of corporate sponsor proposals and assisting with solicitations. Sarver also served as producer of all radio and television broadcasts including men’s and women’s basketball games, baseball games and the Dana Altman television and radio shows while serving as the play-by-play voice for all baseball game broadcasts, co-host of the Dana Altman radio show and color analyst for men’s basketball road game broadcasts.

In April, 1996, Sarver was promoted to Assistant Director of Athletics, relinquishing his day-to-day sports information responsibilities in favor of supervising the Sports Information Director and the Associate Sports Information Director. Sarver’s new duties included the designing, developing, implementing and maintaining a new customers database for ease of tracking, communicating and recording Jaybacker membership gifts and men’s basketball season ticket purchases. At the same time, Sarver was responsible for developing and implementing a men’s basketball season ticket priority seating program including all verbal communications to customers and the writing, designing and editing of all letters, brochures and newsletters. Sarver also assisted the department in raising funds for construction of the Student-Athlete Support Center and the renovation of the CU Sports Complex by identifying potential donors and writing, editing and designing solicitation brochures and letters.

Sarver is a native of Oglesby, Ill. He and his wife Lisa - a 1990 Creighton graduate and a 1993 Creighton School of Law graduate - reside in Omaha with their 16-year-old son Jacob and 14-year-old daughter Cassidy.
