Women's Soccer Battles South Dakota State to Open 2014
OMAHA, Neb. - Creighton women's soccer opens the 2014 season at South Dakota State on Friday, Aug. 22 at 6:00 p.m., then hosts Incarnate Word on Aug. 24 at 1: 00 p.m.
8/22: at South Dakota State - Brookings, S.D. - 6:00 p.m.
8/24: vs. Incarnate Word - Omaha, Neb. - 1:00 p.m.
Creighton Looks to Remain Unbeaten Against Jackrabbits:
The Creighton women’s soccer team puts its 8-0-1 record against South Dakota State to the test as the Bluejays open the 2014 regular season in Brookings on Friday, Aug. 22.
The last meeting between the two squads came on Sept. 12, 2012 in a 2-1 victory for the Bluejays. Creighton and South Dakota State kicked off the 2011 season in Brookings as the Bluejays claimed a 1-0 win.
Creighton is 4-0-0 in Brookings, earning victories in 2005, ’07, ’09 and ’11.

Scouting Creighton (0-0-0):
Coming off back-to-back road exhibition contests, the Bluejays wrapped up two-a-day practices on Tuesday and Wednesday and head to Brookings, S.D. on Thursday.
Sophomore Danielle Rice battled through some nagging injuries in the preseason, but she is expected to start against the Jackrabbits in goal.
Offensively the Bluejays will look for a spark from junior Kirstyn Corder and sophomore Lauren Sullivan. The duo scored a combined 10 goals (Corder-7, Sullivan-3) last season, while Corder notched a goal in the exhibition match at Arkansas.
Scouting South Dakota State (0-0-0):
South Dakota State closed the 2013 season with an 11-5-2 record, inclduing victories in seven of its final nine matches.
The Jackrabbits were picked to finish second in the Summit League Poll, but dropped a 3-0 decision to Kansas in exhibition action.
Offensively SDSU is led by returners Alyssa Brazil and Megan Kingston. Brazil led the team in scoring from the midfield in 2013, while Kingston posted a team-best four assists.
South Dakota State will have a decision to make in goal. The 2013 starter in every contest, Nicole Inskeep, returns as does Elisa Stamatakis, who started 16 games in 2012. Stamatakis sat out all of last seeason due to injury. Inskeep posted an impressive 0.57 GAA last season, while Stamatakis delivered five shutouts in 2012.
Scouting Incarnate Word (0-0-0):
The Cardinals went 10-6-3 during the 2013 season as Incarnate Word transitioned to Division I. Incarnate Word was picked to finish 10th of 12 teams in the Southland Conference.
Sunday will be the first meeting between the Cardinals and Bluejays.
Incarnate Word will look to sophomore Abilgail Koenigs to lead the offense as she posted seven goals and an assist in 2013.
In the net Heather Kowalik returns after allowing 19 goals in 19 matches last season.
Incarnate Word went 0-2 in exhibition play, falling to Texas (7-0) and Texas-San Antonio (2-0). Against the Longhorns, the Cardinals were outshot 37-1.
Kickoff on the Road
Creighton has an 11-10-2 mark in season openers all-time, including a 5-7-2 record under Bruce Erickson.
The Jays are 5-7-0 when starting a season on the road. Creighton fell at Utah State
(L, 0-3) last season and bested South Dakota State 1-0 in 2011.
Despite dropping its final two matches of 2013, the Bluejays and goalkeeper Danielle Rice held their opponents scoreless in the opening period in both contests.
