OMAHA, Neb. -- The 2013 Creighton Men's Soccer season came to an abrupt end on Thursday night as Seattle stunned the host Bluejays, 2-1, in first round action of the NCAA Tournament. Miguel Gonzalez scored twice for the host Redhawks, who were making their first NCAA Tournament appearance.
With the win, Seattle (11-8-4) will return to its hometown to meet the tournament's No. 2 seed, Washington (14-1-4) on Sunday at 5 pm Pacific in Seattle, Wash. The Redhawks are 9-0-3 in its last 12 matches since a 2-0 loss to Washington on Oct. 8th.
Creighton got on the board in the 15th minute, taking advantage of a Seattle miscue to score the game's first goal. A Redhawk defender passed the ball back to goalie Jake Feener inside the box, which resulted in a foul. McCrary quickly spotted the loose ball from about 10 yards out and dished it 20 feet left to an open Makh, who beat Feener for his first career goal in his final match as a Bluejay. It was McCrary's third assist of the season.
Seattle evened up the game in the 31st minute as Gonzalez found the back of the net for the 14th time of 2013. He gathered a loose ball, turned and fired, beating CU keeper Alex Bolowich for the equalizer.
Creighton had a golden opportunity to take the lead with 25:48 left in regulation when Myles Englis was taken down in the box, forcing a penalty kick. Castro, who had been 4-for-4 career in penalty kick situtations, sailed his shot high and the game remained tied.
Gonzalez scored the game-winning goal in the 72nd minute, ripping a blast from the top of the box over the outstretched hand of Bolowich. It was Gonzalez's fourth game-winner of the fall, and came off the first assist of the fall by Michael Roberts. Gonzalez's 15 goals this fall rank third nationally.
