Providence, R.I. - The Creighton women's soccer team earned its first BIG EAST Conference win, 3-2, over Providence on Thursday, Oct. 3.
The win lifted the Bluejays to 8-3-1 on the season and 1-1-1 in BIG EAST play, while Providence fell to 4-5-3 overall and 1-2-0 in conference play.
Creighton fell behind 1-0 in the 29th minute of play as Providence's Allison Walton delivered an unassisted goal at 29:00 on a shot to the left corner.
The deficit, though, did not last long as freshman Lauren Sullivan tallied the equalizer at 33:33, heading in a feed from sophomore Jill Richgels. The play was set up by a Providence foul, giving Richgels a free kick.
The match went to halftime knotted at 1-1, with Providence holding a 10-7 shot edge.
Head coach Bruce Erickson's halftime speech seemed to breath new life into Creighton as the Bluejays controlled the second half.
Just four minutes into the second period, junior Angela Benson punched in her first career goal to give Creighton a 2-1 lead. Benson's goal came off a Bluejay corner as Richgels sent in the pass and Benson delivered a shot into the center of the net, just under the crossbar.
After senior Kelsey O'Donnell had a shot just bounce off the post in the 57th minute, sophomore Kirstyn Corder drove home the eventual game-winning goal. Freshman Darby Hugunin set up Corder with a pass to Corder just in front of the net.
Providence got a late goal (71:04) from Lauren Elia, but Creighton claimed its first conference road win since Oct. 18, 2011 by a 3-2 score.
The Bluejays outshot Providence 11-5 in the second half and 18-15 overall.
Creighton goalkeeper Danielle Rice picked up her eighth win of the season, collecting three saves. Providence's keeper, Jessica Goudreault, finished with eight saves in the loss.
"What a great effort to get the win, I'm really excited for our team," said Erickson. "We certainly created enough chances to put them away but had to battle to the end. Our depth made a big difference in this game."
The Bluejays continue their current road trip on Sunday, Oct. 6 at Seton Hall, the match is scheduled to begin at 12 pm (CT).
