OMAHA, Neb. -- Creighton Volleyball moved back into a tie for second-place in the BIG EAST standings with a convincing 3-0 sweep of Seton Hall on Sunday afternoon before 1,231 fans at D.J. Sokol Arena. Scores of the match were 25-18, 25-20, 25-18.
Armed with a top-10 RPI nationally, Creighton improved to 16-6 (7-3 BIG EAST). Seton Hall dropped to 12-13 (3-7 BIG EAST) after losing in its first meeting with the Bluejays.
Leah McNary led Creighton with 14 kills, wihle Jess Bird had her second double-double of the weekend with 10 kills and 12 digs. Kate Elman paced the defense with 19 digs, while backcourt mate Ashley Jansen had 10 digs on the afternoon. Creighton hit an even .250 and finished with 47 kills, three aces, 58 digs and 12.5 blocks. Kelli Browning had a hand in nine of the blocks to lead the victors.
Seton Hall was led by nine kills by Molly Grammer, while Shelbey Manthorpe recorded 21 assists and 10 digs to go with a team-high four blocks. The Pirates tallied 30 kills, one ace, 54 digs and eight blocks while hitting .087 overall.
Creighton showed no signs of a slow start that hindered its performance on Friday, quickly racing to an 14-6 lead in an eventual 25-18 set one win. Five different Bluejay women had five kills in the game as Michelle Sicner directed the offense to .343 hitting and collected 13 assists.
Trailing 5-3 early in the second frame, Jansen served up a 7-0 run to double-up the Pirates on the scoreboard, and SHU got no closer than three the rest of the set. Mcnary had six kills in the set, while Elman and Bird both had six digs to spearhead a defense that finished with 20 digs.
Creighton trailed 9-8 in the third set before Elman authored a 6-0 run at the service line. Melanie Jereb and Katie Neisler also had long serving runs as CU cruised to the 25-18 triumph. Browning had four blocks in the final set, which helped force seven attack errors by the guests.
Creighton returns to the road next weekend when it plays at Villanova on Friday (5 pm Central) and Georgetown on Saturday (6 pm Central).
NOTES: The match featured three starters from Waukesha (Wis.) Catholic Memorial High School, a trio that included Creighton's Kelli Browning and Seton Hall's Sara Connell and Amanda Hansen ...The win was Creighton's first 3-0 sweep since a Oct. 13 sweep of league-leading Marquette.
