William & Mary (2-2-1) scored the game-winner on a long cross from left to right into Jeff Bombelles who registered the deciding score in the 107th minute. As in Friday’s 2-1 double overtime win against host Old Dominion, Creighton (4-1-0) trailed early but came back to claim a 2-1 lead. But the Tribe knotted the score in the 82nd minute before the match headed into overtime.
The Tribe scored early in the match on a goal by Josh West at 3:26 to take a quick 1-0 advantage over the Bluejays.
Creighton freshman Marvin Iskra scored his first career goal as a Bluejay in the 11th minute, beating Tribe goalkeeper David Phillips after a scramble in the box to tie the score at 1-1. CU senior Sean Kim assisted on the score, his second helper of the season.
The teams went into the half tied at 1-1. The Jays held a 7-3 advantage in shots and a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.
In the second half, Kim scored his second goal of the season to give the Bluejays a 2-1 lead in the 64th minute. Phillips saved a shot from CU junior Eric Miller, but Kim headed the ball into the net off the rebound for the score. Miller was credited with his first assist of the season.
William & Mary tied the match at 2-2 in the 82nd minute on a goal by Chris Albiston. Neither team scored in the final minutes of regulation nor in the first overtime period before the Tribe connected on the game-winning score in double overtime.
The loss drops Creighton’s all-time record as the top-ranked team in the nation to 9-2-1. It also marked the Jays’ first overtime defeat since September 2010. The Bluejays were 9-0-6 in their previous 15 overtime contests. The Bluejays trail the all-time series with William & Mary at 2-1-0.
Creighton goalkeeper Alex Bolowich suffered his first loss of the season to go to 4-1-0, making four saves in just over 106 minutes of action. Phillips made six saves for the Tribe and improved to 2-2-1 in 2013.
The teams tied with 19 shots apiece in the match while William & Mary edged CU in corner kicks, 6-5.
Creighton hosts BIG EAST foe St. John’s next Saturday, Sept. 21 at 7 p.m. CT for the Jays’ annual homecoming match. The contest will mark the Bluejays’ first BIG EAST men’s soccer match at Morrison Stadium.
