Men's Basketball Ranked 21st in Final Coaches Poll

OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton men's basketball team was ranked 21st nationally in the final USA Today Top 25 Coaches Poll that was released on Tuesday. The ranking is identical to the final slotting of the 2011-12 Creighton team that also won the MVC Tournament and reached the third round of the NCAA Tournament.

Creighton went 3-2 against teams that finished in the top-25, including a pair of victories over No. 4 Wichita State. The Bluejays join Louisville, Kansas, Ohio State, Syracuse, Michigan State, Florida, Marquette, Indiana, Duke, Georgetown, Michigan, New Mexico and Wisconsin as teams in the top-25 of the final coaches poll each of the past two seasons.

Statistically, the Creighton team finished in the top-25 of nine different categories, including second in both field goal percentage and three-point field goal percentage. CU was also fourth in assists per game, ninth in free-throw percentage, 10th in three-pointers per game, 13th in assist/turnover ratio, 16th in scoring margin and 23rd in both winning percentage and points scored. One area of great improvement came in field goal percentage defense, where Creighton soared from 222nd a year ago all the way up to 77th this season.

Unofficially, the Jays also finished sixth nationally in average home attendance (17,155), though those figures likely won't be released for several more weeks by the NCAA.

Individually, Doug McDermott led the country in points scored (834) and field goals made (284). The junior forward was also second in points per game, 18th in free-throw percentage and 37th in field goal percentage. Senior guard Grant Gibbs ranked 13th in assist/turnover ratio and 22nd in assists per game.
