OMAHA, Neb. – The Creighton men's soccer team upset No. 20 Stanford 2-0 in the 2014 season opener at Morrison Stadium Friday night.
With the win the Bluejays move to 1-0-0 while the Cardinal fall to 0-1-0 to begin the 2014 season. The victory extended Creighton’s unbeaten streak to 6-0-2 in season openers over the last eight years. The Jays are now 11-3-4 versus ranked teams over the past four seasons.
Creighton freshman Ricky Lopez-Espin scored the game winner and his first career goal in the 11th minute on a feed from junior Timo Pitter to give the Bluejays an early 1-0 lead. Lopez-Espin scored his first career goal from the right side beating the Stanford goalkeeper to the left.
In the second half, CU sophomore Fabian Herbers tallied the second goal for the Jays in the 53rd minute on an assist from Lopez-Espin. Herbers received a long touch pass from Lopez-Espin on the left side, on a play started by junior Christian Blandon, and chipped it in over the goalie to yield the final score.
Creighton junior Connor Sparrow posted his first shutout of the season while playing a full 90 minutes in net. CU outshot Stanford 7-6 and tied in corners at 3-3.
The Jays are back in action on Sunday when they host Santa Clara at 7 p.m. CT inside Morrison Stadium.
