OMAHA, Neb. -- The No. 23 Creighton Volleyball team held its only exhibition of the fall on Friday night at D.J. Sokol Arena, as the 'Blue' Team topped the 'White' Team in four sets. Scores in favor of the Blue were 23-25, 25-22, 25-16, 25-14.
The match was played at a high clip, not surprising for a team coming off consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances and returning 12-of-13 letterwinners.
Five women posted double-doubles in the match, including preseason All-BIG EAST senior Leah McNary and junior Melanie Jereb, as well as setters Maggie Baumert, Kenzie Crawford and Michelle Sicner. The line-ups varied each set as all but three women saw time playing for each squad at some point in the evening.
Creighton's four newcomers contributed for 26 kills and 22 digs, heightening the battle for playing time on one of deepest teams in Kirsten Bernthal Booth's 12 seasons in Omaha.
Creighton opens the regular-season next weekend with three matches at the Kansas Invitational in Lawrence, Kan. The Bluejays open Friday at 9:30 a.m. against Lipscomb before a 5:30 p.m. contest vs. Utah Valley. Saturday CU faces tournament host No. 22 Kansas at 2 p.m. in a rematch of a second round match from the 2013 NCAA Tournament.
