Gerber Becomes First Player with Two HR at TD Ameritrade in 10-8 Win
OMAHA, Neb. - Senior Mike Gerber may have closed his home career in style, becoming the first player to hit two home runs in the same game at TD Ameritrade Park Omaha, as the Bluejays bested Stephen F. Austin, 10-8.
The win pushed the Bluejays to 28-15-1 on the season, while Stephen F. Austin fell to 18-33 overall.
After falling behind 4-0 in the top of the first inning, the Bluejays responded quickly with three runs of their own in the opening frame. Senior Brad McKewon led off the inning with a double to left-center. Two groundouts plated McKewon. With two down in the inning, Gerber stroked a single through the left side. Sophomore Reagan Fowler drew a four-pitch walk to put runners at first and second, then sophomore Brett Murray and freshman Nicky Lopez followed with RBI singles to make it 4-3.
The Lumberjacks pushed their lead to 5-3 with a run in the third but once more Creighton delivered a three-spot in return. This time junior Jake Peter got things going for Creighton, singling through the left side. One out later Fowler drew his second walk of the day, then Murray blasted a two-run triple into right-center to tie the game at 5-5. Moments later, senior Cody Kottich lifted a sacrifice fly to center to put Creighton ahead, 6-5.
In the top of the fifth, Stephen F. Austin scratch across the game-tying run. Creighton responded with its third three-run inning in the fifth to surge back in front 9-6. Gerber opened the fifth with a solo shot over the right-center field wall. Fowler followed with his third walk of the game. Murray sent Fowler to third with a single through the right side. With Lopez at the plate, Murray stole second. Both runners moved up 90 feet on an RBI grounder from Lopez. Kottich wrapped up the scoring with an RBI single to right.
The two teams traded runs in the eighths with Creighton's coming on Fowler's 10th long ball of the year, this one flying over the right field wall on a no doubter.
Junior Max Ising nabbed the win (2-2) tossing 1.2 innings of scoreless relief, while senior Bryan Sova earned his eighth save. Lumberjack hurler Jared Green suffered the loss (2-2) as he allowed three runs on three hits in two innings.
Gerber closed the game, 4-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBI.
Creighton returns to action on Thursday, May 15 as the Bluejays travel to Ohio for a three-game series at Xavier beginning at 2 pm (CT).
