MILLINGTON, Tenn. - Creighton baseball continued to roll as the Bluejays took the series opener with Arkansas State, 7-3, on Saturday, March 8.
The win extended Creighton's undefeated streak to six games as the Bluejays sit at 5-4-1 on the season. Arkansas State, meanwhile, fell to 6-7 in 2014.
Creighton fell behind 1-0 in the first inning as the Red Wolves scored on a two-out RBI double. The Bluejays answered with a four-spot in the third as senior Cody Kottich opened the frame with a walk, moved to second on a sacrifice. Heads up base running allowed Kottich to move to third on a wild pitch and he came in to score via an RBI infield single from senior Brad McKewon.
The Bluejays' first run only wet their appetite as freshman Nicky Lopez was hit by a pitch to put runners and first and second. Junior Jake Peter followed with a two-run double to deep right-center. Senior Mike Gerber continued the hit parade with an RBI single to make it 4-1.
Creighton added two runs in the top of the fourth on McKewon's second RBI single and scored its sixth run on an Arkansas State error.
Junior Kevin Lamb tacked on another Bluejay run in the fifth with an RBI ground out to drive home Gerber, pushing Creighton's lead to 7-1.
Arkansas State tallied two runs in the bottom of the fifth, but Creighton sophomore Matt Warren worked out of the inning to qualify for the win. The Bluejay starter moved to 3-0 on the season, limiting the Red Wolves to three runs on seven hits and two walk in five innings.
A trio of Bluejays relievers closed the door for Creighton as junior Max Ising (1.0 IP), sophomore John Oltman (1.0 IP) and senior Bryan Sova (2.0 IP) preserved the Bluejay win.
Offensively the Bluejays got two hits from both McKewon and Gerber to lead the way.
The Bluejays and Red Wolves continue their three-game series on Sunday, March 9 at 1 pm.
