OMAHA, Neb. -- Doug McDermott scored 28 points in 27 minutes of work and No. 20/19 Creighton scored on 14 straight first half possessions, never trailing in a convincing 88-60 victory over visiting Butler on Tuesday night.
The win was Creighton's 10th straight this season and improved the Bluejays to 15-2 on the year and sole possession of first place with a 5-0 BIG EAST mark. Butler dropped to 10-7 overall and is winless in its first five BIG EAST games.
Creighton owned a 12-7 lead in the opening minutes before the nation's efficient offense blew the roof off of CenturyLink Center Omaha with an offensive explosion for the ages. CU scored on 14 straight possessions in a 33-17 run that buried their fellow BIG EAST newcomer.
Creighton's lead was 53-24 at the break behind 24 points from McDermott, and the lead never dropped under 25 in the second stanza.
McDermott had 28 points, moving up three spots and into 25th in NCAA history with 2,644 career points. He passed former Davidson and current Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry in the process.
Chatman was the only other Bluejay in double-figures, scoring 10 points. Creighton relied on its bench for much of the second half, and finished the game with 36 bench points including nine from Brooks and eight each from big men Hanson and Geoffrey Groselle. Creighton shot 55.6 percent for the game and 7-of-19 from deep in addition to 11-of-14 shooting at the line. Creighton won the rebound battle 44-33 and its four turnovers matched its fewest in 127 games under Greg McDermott.
Butler was paced by a dozen points from Kellen Dunham, though he was hounded into 5-for-14 shooting. Khyle Marshall scored 11 points for the Bulldogs, while Kameron Woods shook off an 0-for-9 shooting performance to snare a game-best 10 rebounds. The Bulldogs shot 35.3 percent for the game, and 31.8 percent from distance while owning a season-low three turnovers.
Creighton returns to action on Saturday when it visits Providence in a 7:07 pm Central tip on FOX Sports 1.
