Pair of Menís Soccer Players Earn NSCAA All-Region Honors

KANSAS CITY, Kan. – Two Creighton men’s soccer players, senior Zach Barnes and junior Eric Miller, earned selections on a National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-Region team the organization announced Tuesday.

Miller claimed a spot on the Great Lakes All-Region Second Team as a defender while Barnes earned recognition on the Great Lakes All-Region Third Team as a midfielder. The selections extend Creighton’s streak of placing a player on an NSCAA All-Region squad to 23 consecutive seasons dating back to 1991.

Playing every minute of the 2013 season for the Jays helped Miller achieve recognition by the NSCAA. The Woodbury, Minn. native scored three goals this season for Creighton, increasing his career total to four. Miller scored game-winning shots against Xavier and at Butler this season, the first of his career. He also assisted on a goal at William & Mary to finish the season with seven points for the Jays. Miller was named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week twice during the season and also earned a spot on the conference’s weekly honor roll.

Barnes started all 20 contests for CU and played every minute of seven of the Bluejays’ nine BIG EAST contests this season, while only spending 28 minutes on the sidelines. The Flower Mound, Texas, native scored his first goal in a Creighton uniform off of a penalty kick in a 2-1 overtime victory at Old Dominion this season. Barnes also assisted on two goals and finished the year with four points for the Jays. The 2013 senior captain claimed All-BIG EAST First Team honors last month to close out his career in Omaha.

Creighton earned an NCAA Tournament bid for the 21st time in 22 years this season. The Bluejays finished the year at 9-9-2 overall after a 2-1 downfall to Seattle U. in a 2013 NCAA First Round match at Morrison Stadium on Nov. 21. Creighton finished fifth in its inaugural season in the BIG EAST with a 4-4-1 mark, culminating with a conference tournament quarterfinal appearance.
