Menís Soccer Rolls to 5-1 Win over DePaul on Senior Day

OMAHA, Neb. – The Creighton men’s soccer team wrapped up its regular-season home slate with a 5-1 victory over BIG EAST rival DePaul during Senior Day at Morrison Stadium on Saturday.

With the victory, Creighton (9-6-2, 4-3-1 BIG EAST) secured a spot in the six-team BIG EAST Men’s Soccer Championship. The Bluejays conclude the regular season on the road next Friday at Providence.

The Bluejays’ five goals against DePaul (4-11-2, 0-7-1 BIG EAST) were the most scored by CU since a 5-0 victory at UMKC on Aug. 31, 2011. The lone Blue Demon goal Saturday marked the first scored by DePaul in the four matches between the schools.

Creighton opened the scoring early in the match as freshman Fabian Herbers connected on a header in the fourth minute on a feed from sophomore Christian Blandon to put the Jays ahead 1-0.

CU sophomore Timo Pitter posted his sixth goal of the season in the 32nd minute to extend the Bluejay lead to 2-0. Classmate Vincent Keller assisted on the goal.

Creighton sophomore Myles Englis scored his first career goal in a Bluejay uniform just seven minutes before the half to put CU up 3-0. Senior Carlos McCrary earned the assist from the left side as Englis pushed it into the open net inside the right post.

The Bluejays led 9-3 in shot attempts in the first half. CU also led corner kicks 1-0 at the break.The Jays quickly opened the scoring in the second half as junior Jose Ribas made it 4-0 on an unassisted goal from 10 yards out at 49:07.

Just over 90 seconds later Ribas was involved in a controversial handball call inside the box that granted DePaul a penalty kick. Blue Demon Art Garza connected on the PK at 51:55 to cut the Jays’ lead to 4-1.

Pitter ended the scoring with a goal in the 56th minute for the Bluejays from the left side. Ribas earned the assist on the score.

The Jays finished the night with an eight-shot advantage of 14-6 and led corner kick attempts 4-1.

CU junior goalkeeper Alex Bolowich finished with three saves and improved to 7-5-1 overall while DePaul’s Eric Sorby took the loss to fall to 4-10-2.

The Bluejays conclude the regular season on the road at Providence next Friday at 1 p.m. CT.
