Castro Attains Academic All-District VII First Team Honors
It marks the second career Academic All-District honor for Castro after also earning the accolade last season. As a First Team All-District member, Castro will be placed on a national ballot for a chance to be recognized as an Academic All-America selection while competing against student-athletes from across the country.
Castro has played in all 16 matches for the Bluejays this season while logging 13 starts. He boasts six points for the Creighton offense so far in 2013 with a pair of goals and two assists.
On Sept. 13, Castro scored his first goal of the season at Old Dominion off of a rebound to give CU a double-overtime victory over the Monarchs. The score was Castro’s third tally and second game-winner in a Creighton uniform.
The midfielder shined in a non-conference match against Michigan State on Sept. 24. Castro scored his second goal of the season and added an assist in a 2-2 draw against the Spartans. As a result, he claimed a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Sept. 30.
Castro posted his second assist of the year against Xavier on Oct. 5 in a 2-0 home victory over the Musketeers.
In addition to his 2012 Capital One Academic All-District VII First Team selection last season, Castro also was named to the 2012 Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) Scholar-Athlete First Team. In 2011 he claimed All-MVC Second Team laurels and a National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Midwest Region Second Team selection.
Castro carries a 3.64 grade point average in marketing.
The San Jose, Costa Rica, native is looking to continue the Bluejays’ recent Academic All-America success. In 2011, former goalkeeper Brian Holt was named the Capital One Academic All-America® of the Year in Division I, while teammates Ethan Finlay and Jace Peters were honored on the Academic All-America Second Team.
Prior to that season, the Bluejays owned just two CoSIDA Academic All-America selections in men’s soccer. Shane Havens (2003) and Matt Wieland (2005) each claimed Third Team Academic All-America honors for the Bluejays.
