Baseball Falls to Missouri State, 3-2
OMAHA, Neb. -
The Creighton Baseball squad were unable to duplicate the magic of Thursday night, falling to Missouri State 3-2 on Friday, May 17.
The loss dropped the Bluejays and Bears into a tie in the MVC at 12-8. On the season, Creighton fell to 29-16 overall, while Missouri State moved to 30-20.
The rubber game of the series on Saturday will secure the No. 3 seed in the Missouri Valley Tournament for the victor.
Creighton opened the scoring in the first with a manufactured run. Junior Brad McKewon legged out a leadoff single, moved to second on a sacrifice by junior Federico Castagnini. He took third via a passed ball, then scored on an RBI groundout from sophomore Jake Peter.
Missouri State answered with single runs in the third and the fourth frames, taking advantage of two throwing errors to score in the third. The Bears got back-to-back singles to open the fourth and eventually took the lead on a sacrifice fly from shortstop Travis McComack.
Peter went to the mound in the ninth, but Missouri State touched up the Jays' closer for a run on three hits to take a 3-2 lead. The game-winning RBI came off the bat of Eric Cheray on a single to right.
Unlike Thursday, the Jays went down in order in the ninth.
MSU reliever Erik Shanahan moved to 3-1 on the season with 1.2 innings of scoreless ball, while Grant Gordon nabbed his fourth save of the season with a flawless ninth.
Peter fell to 2-1, giving up one run on three hits in an inning of work. Sophomore Mark Lukowski tossed four innings of scoreless relief for the Jays in the loss.
The Jays and Bears wrap up their three-game series and the 2013 regular season on Saturday, May 18 at 1 p.m. in TD Ameritrade Park Omaha.
