Men's Tennis Drops a 4-0 Decision to WSU
ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Creighton men's tennis team wrapped-up the 2011 season on Friday with a 4-0 loss in the Missouri Valley Conference to the Shockers of Wichita State. WSU (15-8) needed just the point from doubles and three straight singles finishes to defeat the Jays (7-10).
In doubles play, Juan Estenssoro and Valentin Mihai defeated Gabe Nagy and Ryan Norman 8-2 in No. 3 doubles to start the day. Gueillermo Nicol and Vlad Marinescu then defeated Kyle Obermeier and Sean Mathison 8-3 in the No. 2 doubles, ensuring the point for the Shockers. The third match was not finished, as the Shockers already had the point and it need not be played out in the Missouri Valley Tournament. Billy Paluch and JT Christian did not finish against David Cavalcanti and Matheus Periera at the No. 1 doubles.
The Shockers then won three straight singles matches to earn the win, picking up the win at No. 2, No. 4 and No. 6 singles. Guillermo defeated Nagy 6-1, 6-0 to lead off the singles matches, followed by Adrian Chermaci topping Norman 6-0, 6-2. Periera then defeated Christian 6-0, 6-3 at the No. 2 singles, giving the Shockers the 4-0 win.
When the final match was finished, Paluch and Marinescu were tied 6-6 in the No. 1 singles, Cavalcanti had a 6-1, 2-1 lead over Obermeier at the No. 3 singles, and Bryan Lube was leading Mihai 6-3, 4-1 in the No. 5 singles.
Creighton says good-bye to one senior, Bryan Lube, following the conclusion of the MVC Tournament. Lube played most of his matches at No. 5 singles this season, finishing at 9-15 on the season.
