OMAHA, Neb. - In front of a very large crowd at Hanscom Indoor Tennis Center, the Creighton women's tennis team was victorious in every match, defeating Western Illinois 7-0 in the opening weekend. Creighton improves to 1-0 on the season while the Leathernecks fall to 1-2.
The Jays earned the point in doubles, as they were victorious in all three matches. In no. 1 doubles, Anna Kirshenbaum and Analese Snyder defeated Marcela Brandao and Jill Furlong 8-3. Following suit, Kelsey Schmidt and Mary McMullan beat Amy Unzicker and Claire Griffin 8-3 in the no. 2 doubles position. In the final match of doubles play, no. 3 doubles, Sarah Cadwallader and Leesa Cadwallader partnered up to defeat Melissa Kaufmann and Kara Chicoine 8-1.
In singles action, Kirshenbaum started off the hot streak, defeating Brandao 6-1, 6-1 in no. 1 singles. Schmidt then defeated Furlong 6-2, 6-2, putting the Jays up on the Leathernecks early.
Creighton continued the victory march through the rest of the singles matches, picking up the wins in every category. In no. 3 singles, Snyder defeated Unzicker 6-4, 6-1, while Maestro was victorious over Griffin 6-0, 6-2 in no. 4 singles.
McMullan pulled out an impressive 6-0, 6-1 victory over Kauffman in no. 5 singles, while Sarah Cadwallader finished out the winning parade, defeating Madison Zimmerman 6-0, 6-0.
The women's tennis team will be back on the courts again on Saturday, February 5th, when they take on their first MVC opponent.
