Cross Country Teams Compete at the Bradley Classic

PEORIA, Ill. - The Creighton men's cross country team finished 14th and the women finished 17th at the eighth annual Bradley Classic on Friday. Among the 19 men’s teams and 21 women’s teams that competed were Missouri Valley Conference foes Drake, Wichita State, Illinois State, Northern Iowa and host school Bradley.
Drake won the men’s team title with 76 points, Wichita State finished second with 111 points and South Dakota State’s 122 points finished third. The University of Missouri claimed the women’s title with 65 points, Illinois State finished second with 89 points and finishing third was Eastern Michigan with 124 points.
Ross Clarke of Butler University was the top male finishing at 24:20 and Illinois State’s Krista Deceault finished first with a time of 20:56.
Returning to his 2010 form, Chris Culhane once again led the Creighton men. Out of 188 runners, the junior finished 28th overall with a time of 25:39.
Senior Casey Jergenson’s time of 26:26 was good for 73rd overall, and the second-fastest time of his career. Freshman Drew Prescott was the third to cross the line for the Jays. He finished 114th with a time of 27:09.
Freshman Steve Raimondi (118th, 27:15), junior Tom Shimp (127th, 27:31), junior Mike Hitt (139th, 27:49), sophomore Joe Hamel (144th, 27:58), sophomore Danny Diaz (147th, 28:04) and freshman Quinn Biever (164th, 28:54) also finished the 8K race. Diaz and Hamel set a new career bests at the classic. Diaz’s previous best of 28:24 was set twice in 2010, on Oct. 2 and Oct. 14. Hamel’s previous best of 28:13 was set Oct. 2, 2010.
For the second straight race and third of five races this fall, freshman Meghan Barry led the Bluejay women. Barry finished 74th with a time of 22:57, which was her career best in a 6K race. Her previous best was 23:15 at the Woody Greeno/Nebraska Invitational on Sept. 17. Fellow freshman Courtney Sawle finished 80th with a time of 23:03. In addition, Meagan Wilderson was 141st with a time of 24:04.
Freshman Jessica Johnson (162nd, 24:41), sophomore Lauren Hintz (177th, 25:18), freshman Katie Huyck (190th, 25:45) and junior Izzy Squires (193rd, 25:48) also ran in the classic. Hintz set a new career best in the 6K. Her previous best of 25:31 was set at the NCAA Midwest Regional on Nov. 13, 2010.
The teams are back in action again Sunday, Oct. 30 at the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Championships in Terre Haute, Ind.
