OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton men's and women's cross country teams will open the 2011 season on Saturday with the CU/UNO Classic at Chili Greens. It is the only home meet of the year for the program.
The 5,000 meter women's race will begin at 10 a.m., followed by the 8,000 meter men's race at 10:45 a.m. Creighton, Nebraska, South Dakota and Iowa Western are expected to compete on the men's side. The women's race will feature the same competition, as well as Nebraska-Omaha and Peru State.
Creighton's men's team was picked to finish eighth in the Missouri Valley Conference by the league's coaches in the preseason poll, while the women were slated for 10th.
The Bluejay women are led by returners Meagan Wilderson, Izzy Squires and Lauren Hintz. Creighton's men's team returns seven of its eight runners from last season's MVC championship. Junior Chris Culhane leads the pack of returnees, as he paced the team in 12 of 14 career competitions, including all six meets he competed in last fall.
Nebraska-Lincoln has won the last three men's titles and the past two crowns on the women's side. Creighton last won the men's title in 2007 and the women's first-place trophy in 2004.
"It's a lower-key meet, but I like that when our squads are getting out
there for the first time," said third-year Creighton head coach Chas Davis. "It's a
good test to see where everyone is at."
The meet is free to attend and open to the public. Chili Greens is located at 72nd and Spring streets in Omaha.
