AUGUSTA, Kan. -- The Creighton men's cross country team finished ninth at the 2010 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Championships hosted by Wichita State University in Augusta, Kan., on Saturday. The women's team finished 10th. Both of the pre-championship favorites -- the Wichita State women and the Indiana State men -- took home the gold at the event competed on the RAFT Golf Course.
The Bluejay men were led by sophomore Chris Culhane, who led the team in every race this year. He finished the 8,000-meter course in 26:29, good for a 30th-place finish. It was a personal MVC Championships record for Culhane by more than a minute.
The next-best Creighton finisher was freshman Colin Honeker. He crossed the line with a time of 27:35 in his first MVC Championships. A short distance behind Honeker came a pack of Jays. Junior Evan Daugherty finished 59th with a time of 27:51, and sophomore Tom Shinp and freshman Joe Hamel finished back-to-back in 61st and 62nd to round out the team scoring for Creighton. Their times were 28:13 and 28:18, respectively.
Creighton's women were paced by freshman Slaine Kelly. Her 5,000-meter time was 18:57, which netted her 36th place in her first MVC Championships. Kelly led the team in four of the five races she competed in this year.
Another freshman was the second Bluejay to cross the finish line. Meagan Wilderson finished 58th with a time of 19:42. Freshman Hannah Krumreich (20:12) finished 66th, and the Creighton scorecard was topped off by sophomores Izzy Squires (21:08) and Elizabeth Timberlake (21:33). They finished in 71st and 73rd place.
