AUGUSTA, Kan. -- The Creighton men's and women's cross country teams will compete in the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Championships, hosted by Wichita State University, on Saturday at the RAFT Golf Course in Augusta, Kan. The Creighton women have been picked 10th and the men ninth in the pre-championship poll of the league's coaches. The women's 5,000-meter race will begin at 10:30 a.m. followed by the men's 8,000-meter race at 11:30 a.m.

The Creighton men have been led all year by sophomore Chris Culhane, who redshirted last season while battling injuries. At the 2008 MVC Championships, he notched a time of 27:37, but his fastest 8,000-meter time so far this year is 25:22, more than two minutes faster. Joining Culhane for the Jays in Augusta will be juniors Evan Daugherty and Casey Jergenson; sophomores Tom Shimp and Mike Hitt; and freshmen Colin Honeker, Danny Diaz and Joe Hamel.

A young Creighton women's team has been led this year by several freshmen. Slaine Kelly's presonal-record 5,000-meter time came in Salem, Ore., where she crossed the finish line in 18:36. The Jays' other runners will be freshmen Hannah Krumreich, Meagan Wilderson and Lauren Hintz; sophomores Elizabeth Timberlake and Izzy Squires; and senior Carleen O'Brien.

Wichita State, looking for its sixth straight title, was picked first in the women's poll, while Indiana State, seeking back-to-back championships, is favored to win the men's race.
