Cross Country Finishes 11th, 13th at Evansville Invite
Release: 10/18/2008
Freshman Chris Culhane led the men's team for the sixth consecutive race.

EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- The Creighton men’s cross country team finished 11th at the University of Evansville Invitational on Friday at the UE Cross Country Course in Evansville, Ind. The women finished 13th in the final tune-up before the Missouri Valley Conference Championships. There were 22 total teams in the men’s 8K race and 19 teams in the women’s 5K race. The Bluejay men finished 10th out of 14 division I schools, while the women finished 12th in their division.

For the sixth time in as many competitions this year, the Creighton men were led by freshman Chris Culhane. His time of 25:47 resulted in a 37th-place finish and continued a streak of improving his personal record in every race. His time was 33 seconds faster than his his time in San Francisco last week, and just under two minutes faster than his first 8K time on September 6. There were 239 total runners in the men’s race which was won by Dan Dunbar from MVC counterpart Southern Illinois.

The next-best Jays finisher was sophomore Jared Dittman, who finished 61st with a time of 26:12. The next three Creighton runners were all freshmen. Stephen Van Gampleare finished 79th with a time of 26:33; Casey Jergenson finished 107th in 27:00; and Evan Daugherty rounded out the scoring for the men by finishing 120th with a time of 27:22. All of Creighton’s top five finishers ran their fastest race of the season.

The Creighton women were also led by the same runner for the sixth time this year as junior Molly Jergenson finished 24th with a time of 18:39 to pace the Jays. It was the fastest 5K time of her collegiate career. The individual champion was Mary Ballinger from Southern Indiana who ran the course in a time of 17:18. There were 188 runners in the meet.

Next to cross the finish line for the Bluejays was sophomore Aubrey Inman. She finished 64th in 19:28. Next, junior Melissa Greig finished 80th and sophomore Carleen O’Brien finished 91st for Creighton. Their times were 19:51 and 20:04 respectively. The last Jays runner that contributed to the team score was sophomore Ashley Altrichter who finished 96th with a time of 20:16.

Next up for both teams are the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Championships in Springfield, Mo. on November 1. Last year, the men’s team finished fourth at the MVC Championships, its highest-ever finish at the event and the best showing in Valley history by a school without a track and field team. The women are coming off a ninth place finish in 2007.
