CHICAGO -- The Creighton men’s and women’s cross country teams both finished 20th at the Sean Earl Loyola Lakefront Invitational in Chicago on Saturday. The event, hosted by  Loyola University in Chicago, was made up of 34 men’s teams and 32 women’s teams.

For the fourth consecutive race, freshman Chris Culhane led the Creighton men in the 8K race. He finished 69th with a time of 26:26, the best 8K time of his short career, improving on last week’s time at the Woody Greeno Invitational by 40 seconds. There were 371 total runners in the race which was was won by Nikolaus Schweikert of Malone College in a time of 24:49.

The second-best Bluejay runner was sophomore Jared Dittman who finished 80th in 26:38. Next, as has been the case in Creighton’s previous three races this year, came a trio of freshmen. Stepehn Van Gampleare finished 147th with a time of 27:37; Casey Jergenson finished 158th with a time of 27:52; and Evan Daugherty finshed 183rd with a time of 28:13. All three times were good enough for personal 8K records.

Also for the fourth straight time this year, the Creighton women were led by the same runner. Junior Molly Jergenson finished 83rd out of 330 total runners. Her 5K time of 19:45 was her fastest of the year. The individual champion was Sara Vaughn from Alabama who ran the course in 17:37.

Only six seconds behind Jergenson was sophomore Aubrey Inman. She finished 90th in 19:51. Junior Melissa Greig and sophomore Ashley Altrichter finished 151st and 155th for the Jays. Their times were 20:39 and 20:46 respectively. The last Bluejay runner that contributed to the score was sophomore Carleen O’Brien. She finished 164th with a time of 20:56.

Both the men’s and women’s teams have next week off before traveling to San Francisco for the San Francisco State Gator Invitational on October 10.
