Women's Crew Races to Victory at Upper Midwest Collegiate Sprints
OMAHA, Neb. - The Creighton women's crew team rowed past the competition on Sunday, winning the Roberta Rae Becker Award for the overall point trophy at the Upper Midwest Collegiate Sprints. The Jays finished with 147 points, more than second and third place Whichita State (59) and Kansas (39), combined.
"We had great races by our team today," said head coach Dan Chipps. "Every Creighton boat raced well and I am so proud of our team as a whole. What a great event and a wonderful day for rowing."
The Bluejays started off the day by finishing first and second in the Novice 8. The Creighton B boat finished with a time of 7:01.1, just three seconds faster than the first boat, which finished at 7:04.3. Kansas (7:09.3), SLU (7:16.44), UST (7:45.7) and NU (8:01.4) finished out the women's opening race of the day.
Creighton then rowed to a second place finish in the women's Varsity 4 A, finishing at 7:19.4, just five seconds behind Wichita State's 7:14.4. A pair of Creighton boats each finished in second in the women's Novice 4 A and B, with the first boat finishing at 7:39.8 (A) and the second at 7:44.8 (B).
In the next three races, Creighton finished fourth in the W2, finishing with a time of 8:58.4, while the Jays also had boats compete in the women's Varsity 4 (finishing at 7:44.2 and 7:52.4).
Creighton finished out the day winning both the women's 2nd Varsity 8 (6:58.5) and the women's Varsity 8 (6:38.9).
The win in the women's Varsity 8 gave Creighton the Ed Decker Memorial traveling trophy, presented for the first time this year in honor of Ed Decker. Decker, who was a great friend to the rowing community and head coach Dan Chipps, passed away last year. The trophy will always be awarded to the top boat in the women's Varsity 8.
On the men's side of the UMCS 2012, Wichita State won the Mary McGaughn Award by picking up the highest point total on the men's side. The Shockers finished with 91 points (winners in the men's Varsity 4, M2 and the men's Varsity 8), ahead of Saint Thomas (67) and Kansas State (53).
Creighton will again be in action on Saturday, April 14, when they host Nebraska.
