CARTER LAKE, Iowa - The Creighton women's crew team took advantage of no wind and beautiful conditions on Saturday morning, defeating Drake in the first home regatta for the Jays this season. Creighton nabbed all four races, picking up their first sweep this season.
"I am very proud of how all of our boats raced today," said head coach Dan Chipps. "We found an extra gear and the teams raced really well. They exceeded all my expectations, blowing me away in a couple of the races."
The Jays started off the morning by finishing in one of the fastest times Chips can recall. "That is close to if not the fastest race we have rowed in a while. In a long, long while." The first Varsity 8's finished the first race in 6:19, almost a full minute over the 7:06 of the Drake Varsity 8's. Creighton's second Varsity 8's came in second, finishing at 6:43 in the 1900 meter distance on Carter Lake.
Creighton then won in the closest race of the day, with the Varsity 4's finishing just three seconds ahead of Drake's Varsity 4's. After six lead changes in the race, the Jays dug down deep and pushed away in the final 300 meters. Creighton crossed the line at 7:47 while the Bulldogs came in at 7:50. The Novice 4's finished at 8:18.
In the final race of the day, the Jays again came across the line first, with the second Varsity 4's finishing at 7:11 and Drake pulling in at 7:39. Creighton's second Novice 4 finished the race at 9:02.
"Today really was a morale booster," Chipps said. "We will look to get in a solid week of practice before we host the Upper Midwest Collegiate Sprints next week. We are very excited for that race, especially after how well we rode today."
The Jays will race in the regatta next Sunday, expected to start early in the morning.
