DES MOINES, Iowa - The Creighton women's crew team competed in its final competition of the non-championship season, taking on the Drake Bulldogs. The Bluejays and Bulldogs split races 2-2, but the Bulldogs came out on top in the points portion, winning 10 points to Creighton's eight.
"I am excited about how we ended our fall season today," said head coach Dan Chipps. "We struggled in Iowa City a couple weeks ago, but really came together today. We made up a lot of time today from where we were just two weeks ago."
The two squads raced in NCAA championship format racing today, competing on an approximate 2,000 meter course. In the Varsity 4 competition, Drakes boat finished iwth a time of 7:53 while the Bluejays pulled in behind at 8:29.
Creighton's Varsity 8 had one of the most exciting rows of the day, but came up on the short side. Drake's boat finished at 6:21 while the Jays rowed in at 6:22. In the second Varsity 8, Creighton came in first, rowing a time of 6:59 with Drake finishing the race at 7:26.
In the only Novice meet of the day, the Creighton Novice 8 finished a half a minute ahead of the Bulldogs. Creighton finished in 7:15 while Drake came in at 7:46.
"I am very proud with how our team rowed today," said Chipps. "We are now looking forward to the championship season in the spring and being part of the West Coast Conference. Our sights are now set on the conference championships April 29th in Sacramento, Calif."
The crew team returns to action in the spring and will row in six events. March 5-10 the team will travel to Austin, TX for a spring break rowing event. March 11-13 they will again travel south, taking part in the Oklahoma University Invite. The Jays then welcome Drake to Omaha on April 2 and then host the Upper Midwest Collegiate Springs on April 10. The West Coach Conference Championships in Sacramento, Calif., will be held April 29 and then the team will compete in the WIRA April 30-May 1, also in Sacramento.
