OMAHA, Neb. - Sophomore Matt Warren advanced to the Gregg Olson Award Semifinalist list of 36 on Friday, May 30. The original Gregg Olson Award Watch List, announced on May 13, had 83 players listed.
Named an All-American by Collegiate Baseball (Second Team) earlier this week, Warren posted a 10-1 record with a 2.03 ERA, third best in the BIG EAST, in 12 starts in 2014. On the season he appeared in 14 games, tossing a team best 84.1 innings. Warren walked just 25 batters while striking out 45 and yielding 62 hits. His 6.62 hits-allowed-per-nine-innings ranked second in the conference. Matt tossed one complete game, limiting Georgetown to a mere two hits in nine innings on April 11 and was named to the All-BIG EAST First Team.
The 2014 Gregg Olson Award presented by Toolshed Sports honors college baseball’s breakout player of the year. The annual award is given to a top amateur baseball player who elevates his game to an elite level throughout the season.The Olson Award has been developed to honor college baseball’s success stories and showcase players like Olson who have raised the level of their game through hard work, strength of mind and determination. Eligible players will be those who are omitted from major publication’s preseason All American prognostications; however by the end of the season their on the field performance will demonstrate that they are among the top amateur baseball players in the nation.
Finalists are scheduled to be announced on Friday, June 6th at the beginning of Super Regional action. The winner of the 2014 Gregg Olson Award will be named in Omaha, Nebraska during the College World Series which is to be held this season at TD Ameritrade Park from June 15-June 25/26. 2014.
