Softball Drops Twin Bill to BIG EAST Leader DePaul
OMAHA, Neb. – The Creighton softball team came up short in a doubleheader against league-leading DePaul dropping game one 6-4 before a 7-3 setback in the nightcap at the CU Sports Complex Friday.
Creighton (25-18, 6-7 BIG EAST) and DePaul (32-8, 12-0 BIG EAST) each finished with seven hits in each game but the Blue Demons were able to build an early 4-0 in each contest and plate more runs.
Junior Liz Dike hit a home run in both games to extend her conference-leading total to 14. Dike led the Jays with four hits, three RBI and a 1.429 slugging percentage on the day. Freshman Allie Reinhart added a pair of hits and two RBI for the Jays’ offense.
CU senior Becca Changstrom opened in the circle in game one for the Bluejays.
A three-run homer put the Blue Demons up 3-0 in the top of the first in the opener. DePaul added a run in the next frame on after a Creighton error and a walk to make it 4-0 in favor of the visitors.
Reinhart posted a one-out single and would later score for the Bluejays in the bottom of the second to cut the lead to 4-1 after two.
In the top of the third, an RBI double pushed across another run for DePaul and yield a 5-1 lead.
Senior Blair Lowe doubled to open the CU fifth and two batters later, Dike belted her first homer of the day to cut the Blue Demon lead to 5-3.
After a scoreless sixth, DePaul hit a solo home run to build a 6-3 advantage.
The Jays rallied with two outs in the seventh. After Dike drew a walk, a double from junior Bri Lingl scored a run for the final result.
Changstrom fell to 14-10 overall with the loss.
CU senior Alexis Cantu got the pitching start in game two.
DePaul opened the scoring in the top of the second frame. A single, a Creighton error and a double provided the Blue Demons a 2-0 lead.
The visitors doubled the lead in the top of the next frame with two-out, two-RBI double to make it 4-0 DePaul.
Reinhart opened the scoring for Creighton with a two-RBI single in the bottom of the third frame for a 4-2 score after three.
After a scoreless fourth, DePaul extended its lead to 6-2 after another two-out, two-RBI double.
Dike homered to deep center field to open the Creighton fifth to cut the Blue Demon lead to 6-3.
Junior Mac Millsapugh took over for Cantu in the circle for the final two innings.
DePaul answered with a solo homer of its own in the top of the sixth to yield the final, 7-3.
Cantu took the loss to drop to 5-6 on the season.
The Bluejays end the three-game set against DePaul with a single contest slated for 11 a.m. CT Saturday at the CU Sports Complex.
