Men's Basketball Falls To Duke, 66-50

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- The No. 22 Creighton men's basketball team saw its season end with a 66-50 loss to No. 6 Duke in third-round action of the 2013 NCAA Tournament on Sunday night in Philadelphia.

Duke (29-5) advanced to the Sweet 16 with the win, which was also its 2,000th in program history. The Blue Devils will take on Michigan State next Friday night in Indianapolis.

Creighton (28-8) senior Grant Gibbs scored his team's first two baskets, including a dunk seven seconds in after grabbing the opening tip and spinning around two defenders. Duke would score the next 11 points, including a basket by Mason Plumlee where Gibbs was charged with his second personal foul that made it 9-4.

Both teams were off the mark in the first 12 minutes, with Creighton opening 4-for-19 and Duke not much better at 6-for-21.

Creighton came back to take a 21-20 lead after two free throws with 3:19 left in the half, but Duke scored nine of the next 11 points to lead 29-23 at intermission, including a banked three-pointer at the buzzer by Tyler Thornton. Doug McDermott led all players with 13 points in the first half for a Creighton team that tied season-lows for field goal percentage (.296) and points (23) in a half.

Both teams had star players in foul trouble early in the second half. Plumlee (17:48) and Ryan Kelly (13:25) for Duke each picked up their fourth, while Creighton's Gibbs (16:56), Echenique (16:33) and McDermott (15:53) all had three personals by the first media timeout after intermission.

A lay-up from Amile Jefferson with 10:28 left gave Duke its first double-digit lead at 43-32, and Creighton got no closer than eight the rest of the way.

Duke made 16-of-20 free throws in the second half to pull away for the 16-point win, as the final score marked the largest lead of the game for either side.

McDermott led Creighton with 21 points and nine rebounds, but shot 4-of-16 from the floor. Gregory Echenique had nine points, six reobunds and two blocks, while Gibbs finished with eight points, five rebounds and four assists in his final game. Creighton shot 30.2 percent from the field overall, making just 2-of-19 three-point attempts.

Duke was led by 21 points from Rasheed Sulaimon, while Seth Curry scored 17. Plumlee finished with 10 points and five rebounds before fouling out.
