OMAHA, Neb. –
The No. 6 Creighton men’s soccer team opened the season with a 2-0 victory over No. 14 Tulsa after scoring a pair of second-half goals at Morrison Stadium on Friday night.
After a scoreless first half, freshman Fabian Herbers
scored his first career goal as a Bluejay at 62:17 to give Creighton a 1-0 advantage. Taking a ball from sophomore Timo Pitter
, Herbers knocked in a shot from the right side past Golden Hurricane goalie Cody Mumma for the score.
Pitter added a late goal of his own with just over three minutes remaining. After successive attempts from the right side late in the match, Pitter finally put one past Mumma just inside the left post to give the Jays the two-goal victory. Classmate Vincent Keller
assisted on the score.
The Bluejays posted 21 shots in the match to 19 from Tulsa. Pitter recorded nine of those shots including four shots on goal.
Junior Alex Bolowich
earned his first victory of the year in goal for the Jays, making seven saves on the evening.
Cristian Mata led Tulsa with five shots on the evening. Mumma took the loss for the Golden Hurricane.
Creighton improved to 1-0-0 on the year, while Tulsa fell to 0-1-0.
A raucous crowd of 3,204 watched the ranked opponents battle at Morrison.
With the win Creighton improved to 5-0-2 in season openers over the past seven seasons. CU head coach Elmar Bolowich
is undefeated at 3-0 in season lidlifters.
The Bluejays now lead the all-time series with Tulsa 16-9-2 including a 10-2-1 record at home and 4-1-1 slate inside Morrison Stadium.
Creighton continues its opening weekend of the regular season when it hosts Cal Poly at 7:30 p.m. on Sunday at Morrison Stadium as part of a soccer doubleheader with the CU women’s team beginning at 5 p.m. against Northern Colorado.
Both Sunday match start times were moved back into the evening from their earlier kickoffs due to the forecast of excessive heat in the area.
