NORMAL, Ill.- The Bluejay baseball team suffered its second shutout loss of the season, 6-0 to Illinois State on Saturday, May 5.
Creighton fell to 24-13 overall and 8-6 in Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) play, while Illinois State moved to 31-16 on the season and 11-3 in the MVC.
The loss is Creighton's fourth consecutive, the Jays' longest losing streak of the season.
The Jays two best scoring chances came in the fourth and the sixth. Junior Brad McKewon drew a leadoff walk to open the fourth. One out later sophomore Jake Peter slapped a single through the left side to put runners at first and second with only one out. A ground ball to short by senior Alex Staehely moved the runners up 90 feet, but freshman Reagan Fowler ending the inning with a grounder to second.
Creighton's threat in the sixth followed a similar path as junior Jerry Mitchell opened the frame with a single to left. Two outs later, Peter doubled to left-center, then Staehely worked a full-count walk to load the bases. Fowler blasted a shot up the middle that caught the back of the mound and caromed right to Redbird second baseman Paul DeJong.
Illinois State got a single run in the third, two more in the fifth and put the game away with three in the sixth.
Bluejay starter, senior Nick Musec, suffered the loss (1-5). Musec allowed three runs on five hits and four walks in 4.1 innings of work. Senior Mark Winkelman relieved Musec in the fifth, taking sole possession of the MVC record for career appearnaces with 124.
Redbird hurler, Dan Savas, moved to 7-0 on the year with an eight inning effort. Savas limited the Jays to three hits and three walks.
Peter finished with two of Creighton's three hits, while Mitchell had the other.
Creighton and Illinois State will wrap up the three-game series on Sunday, May 5 at 1:00 p.m. Freshman Austin Groth gets the start for the Jays, while Illinois State counters with Brad Sorkin.
